Michael JOHNSON on Barack OBAMA

2009/02/01

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/feb/01/michael-johnson-barack-obama

QUOTE  I think the new presidency will have an effect not on current sportspeople but on a lot of African-American kids who have in the past seen sports as the only vehicle out of inner-city deprivation and over barriers to their development. But not everyone can be a professional athlete, and many of those kids that hang their entire hopes on sports will fail. In the meantime, they do not take advantage of educational opportunities to be successful in other arenas, because they don’t feel that there’s a future there for them – they don’t see role models to give them hope. Now they have Obama, who is one of the most powerful people in the world. So I believe that African-American young men will now see other opportunities for them than in just sports.
